Matsumoto Shouseki is a ceramist specializing in bonsai pots, renowned for the quality and refinement of his work. Throughout his career, he has evolved from initially producing unglazed pieces to exploring a wide range of techniques, including glazed, decorated, and carved works. He is currently particularly known for his Arita porcelain creations, both painted and unglazed, with a special mastery of the akae and sometsuke styles, in which he combines traditional Japanese ceramics with a highly personal artistic sensibility. In addition to his work as an artisan, he dedicates a significant portion of his time to teaching and passing on his knowledge to new generations. Born in 1940 in Shizuoka Prefecture as Haruyoshi Matsumoto (松本治義), he began working with bonsai ceramics in 1958 as a hobby that soon became his vocation. His talent was recognized early on when he received an award at a major exhibition of new artists in 1975, and since then his work has been presented on numerous occasions at the prestigious Shohin Kobachi Exhibition, establishing him as one of the most highly regarded figures in the world of Japanese bonsai.
