Heian Kōsen is considered one of the most renowned Japanese ceramicists, alongside the great traditional masters of Tokoname. He is especially admired for the richness and excellence of his glazes, as well as the impeccable firing quality of his works. His real name was Yoshikazu Hashimoto; he was born on February 28, 1933 (Year 8 of the Shōwa era) in Kyoto. Essentially self-taught, he began his journey into the art of bonsai in 1955 (Shōwa 30). Later, in 1965 (Shōwa 40), deeply drawn to the ceramics of Master Tōfukuji, he also began creating flowerpots, developing this skill in a self-taught manner.
