Unlike sometsuke, which is an underglaze technique (the color is applied before the glaze and at a high temperature), Aka-e is an overglaze or enamel-on-glaze technique. The artisan paints on the already glazed and fired piece, and then performs a second firing at a lower temperature to fix the pigments.
