An elegant rectangular bonsai pot with an open lip, from the renowned Izumi-Ya workshop in Tokoname, crafted by the artist known in Europe as Zenigo. It features a beautiful patina acquired over time, which enhances its character. It imitates the old Nakawatari and Kowatari. pot designs. The piece shows some minor imperfections, as well as occasional restorations with metallic paint that mimics the aesthetic of kintsugi in gold. Its shudei clay and considerable depth make it an ideal choice for a juniper with a strong and striking presence. The piece is completed with an incised geometric decorative border that adds balance and refinement to the design.
Izumi-Ya is one of the oldest kilns in the region, dedicated to the production of bonsai pots in Tokoname since the time of Matsushita Masuhisa, father of Matsushita Masuo (Zenigo). In its early days, the workshop crafted its pieces entirely by hand, maintaining traditional local pottery techniques. The term “Zenigo” appears to be an imprecise transliteration; “Senshirinsei” is more accurate. However, the name “Zenigo” has become popular and widespread in Europe.
