Green glazed oval bonsai pot. shunzaido.
Shunzaido is a Chinese kiln located in the Yixing region, renowned for exporting its pots to Japan, Europe, and the United States. The company belongs to Mr. Chu Shuiming, and its pieces were marketed in Japan through Kinbon, a magazine and distributor specializing in bonsai. Shunzaido produced pots of extraordinary quality, distinguished by the excellence of their clay bodies, the richness of their glazes, the precision of their firings, and the high level of craftsmanship. Their pots for shohin bonsai are particularly noteworthy, with glazes exhibiting a characteristic sheen that may be more suitable for smaller trees. However, over time, these finishes acquire a patina that softens their original shine and adds considerable aesthetic interest. Four artists are known to have been associated with Shunzaido's production, the most renowned being Sumei. Some pieces bear the inscription "Made in Japan." This legend was used for commercial purposes to promote its acceptance and sale in the market, although the flowerpots are actually of Chinese origin.
