Kataoka Toshio was one of Tokoname's great master potters and a key figure at the renowned Yamaaki kiln, famous worldwide for its exceptionally high-quality bonsai pots. The Yamaaki kiln was founded by his father, Akiji Kataoka, who established a tradition of craftsmanship marked by excellence, precision, and respect for traditional Japanese ceramics. Building on this family heritage, Toshio developed an elegant and refined style that made Yamaaki pots highly prized by collectors and bonsai enthusiasts around the globe. His brother, Sadamitsu Kataoka, also worked alongside him, continuing the family tradition and contributing to the kiln's international prestige. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Kataoka family, Yamaaki became one of Tokoname's most important names during the 20th century. Today, pots signed by Toshio Kataoka and Yamaaki are considered true collector's items in the bonsai world. The kiln is currently closed and represented by Hiroaki Inoue.
