CONIFERS

Conifers are species widely used both in gardening in general and in bosai, their development is a little slower than that of other groups, although it is a very long-lived genus of which there are thousand-year-old specimens in nature.

The trees of this group are so called because most of them carry their seeds in specialised structures called cones. The leaves of conifers are linear, needle-like or needle-like, which is why the pinching of these species in bonsai has to be done with great care and is different from that of deciduous trees.

A conifer bonsai is ideal if your terrace or garden is very sunny in summer and very cold in winter. You can admire the hardiness of some species by contemplating the time-sculpted dead wood of the Laos Garden junipers or the twisted branches of the Scots pine bonsai. Don't be fooled by their small size or the fact that they are in a pot, they can be as old as they would be in the wild.

Japanese pines (white pine, red pine and black pine) are known for combining elegance and style, which can be cascading (kengai), semi cascading (han-kengai), formal upright (chokkan), informal upright (moyogi), windswept (fukinagashi), literati (bunjin), etc. And if you like forests (yose-ue), why not have one at home?

Among the most popular conifers for bonsai are junipers (sabina, itoigawa, kishu), pines (sylvestris, densiflora, thumbergii, parviflora), yews (cuspidata, baccata), larix (larch), cryptomerias and others.

If you want to start with a conifer and you don't know which one, tell us the climatic conditions of your environment and we will recommend the best one for you.
